On the evening of November 29th 1958, on the stage of the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, when Art Blakey grabs the microphone to say "I would like to take a moment and say good evening on behalf of the Jazz Messengers and myself", everyone knows that he is living a historic moment. Pianist Bobby Timmons has just created the iconic "Moanin'" and saxophonist Benny Golson the famous "Along Came Betty", which the Jazz Messengers mix with compositions by their illustrious companions, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. The essence of world jazz is on stage, and is taken up again on this edition forgotten until today.

The story of this discovery

“A few months after having discovered the recordings of Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans, we decided to return to the Netherlands to deepen our research. During this second trip, we found this incredible recording by Art Blakey in 1958. The recording was old old and we feared the sound quality wouldn't be great. We were wrong: the sound take was a model of its kind and Moanin' seemed to be the greatest version ever recorded! We are very proud of the restoration work accomplished on this now legendary album”

Frédéric D'ORIA-NICOLAS
Musical treasure seeker

Jazz Magazine

"This particularly ephemeral formation of the Jazz Messengers, led by Benny Golson, is for some, simply the best. Never before has the group achieved this balance between passion, elegance and swing, this ideal between freedom and sophistication. And it will never find again totally this osmosis afterwards. A superbly restored album. Not to be missed. For any reasons."

"Art was an original. He’s the only drummer whose time I recognize immediately. And his signature style was amazing; we used to call him ‘Thunder.’ When I first met him on 52d Street in 1944, he already had the polyrhythmic thing down. Art was perhaps the best at maintaining independence with all four limbs. He was doing it before anybody was." Max Roach

An unequalled sonic know-how.
