The Birth of Cannonball: A Jazz Giant Emerges

Julian “Cannonball” Adderley earned his nickname from childhood antics, but it would soon become synonymous with brilliance in jazz. One of the most versatile musicians of the 20th century, he embraced all jazz styles—from cool and hard bop to funk—drawing equally from African, South American, and blues traditions. Adderley was a relentless creator, forming and reshaping ensembles, always seeking deeper musical expression. His motto: jazz must move forward, but never forget its roots.

Freedom and Mastery: From the U.S. to Europe

Adderley rose to prominence in 1958 with the historic recording Somethin’ Else alongside Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and others. But rather than remain in their shadow, he carved his own path. In 1960, with his brother Nat, he moved to Europe, where many African-American jazz artists found creative liberation beyond U.S. racial tensions. Cannonball flourished, unbound by trends or expectations, drawing from his Southern heritage and a wide range of popular music. His presence on stage was commanding, his sound both powerful and sensual, and his charisma instantly won over audiences.

A Lasting Legacy Captured Live

This album features unreleased recordings from Berlin (1972) and Paris (1969), showcasing Adderley at the height of his powers. From the vibrant energy of “Hummin” to the tender depth of “Manhã de Carnaval,” every track reflects refined artistry. Standouts like “Walk Tall” and “Work Song” embody his commitment to dignity and justice, while “Oh Babe” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” blend raw emotion with joyful groove. The funk undertones throughout hint at the future of R&B, confirming Cannonball’s role as a visionary. A builder of sound and soul, he remains, truly, the Gargantua of jazz.

The History of this Discovery

"It was in the Berlin radio archives that we discovered this 1972 recording of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Listening to the first notes of "Hummin'" our faces beamed with a broad smile and we even started dancing in the studio. But the length of the tapes - too short - did not allow us to consider publishing it. It was only a year later, during our trip to Stockholm, that we discovered another tape of their 1969 concert at the Paris Salle Pleyel, which was just as extraordinary. Today, we are happy to share with you this exceptional album with its absolutely fabulous music and sound!"

“The restorations of The Lost Recordings are worthy of those devoted to master paintings”

"Understanding is the least important thing when it comes to appreciating jazz, because, like everything else, jazz is a form of entertainment. It’s meant to be enjoyed, not understood like a technical blueprint."

An unequalled sonic know-how.
