The Alchemist at the Glocke

The Glocke: one of Herbert von Karajan's favourite halls in Europe. An unusual place, located in the Hanseatic city of Bremen. Designed in 1737 on an octagonal plan, it has remained in this form to this day, and, despite various fires, retains one of the most beautiful acoustics on the old continent.

On that April evening in 1961, in front of nearly 1,400 spectators, the "mountain" Oscar Peterson sat down at his piano, accompanied by his two sidekicks, Ray Brown, the "handsome bassist", as his admirers nicknamed him, and Ed Thigpen, one of the most sought-after drummers on the New York scene.

The Lost Recordings has resurrected this extraordinary concert from the archives of the Bremen radio. Oscar Peterson is a brilliant alchemist, a sort of Pygmalion of himself, who goes to the end of his transformations. He knew how to magnify his mastery of swing, deepen his repertoire, renew himself without denying himself, and thus award jazz its most magical letters of nobility.

The story of this discovery

"It is thanks to the help of Ulf Drechsel, our correspondent in Germany - that we managed, after more than a year of effort, to access the archives of the Bremen radio. It was during our first trip that we identified more than eight original tapes including this miraculous recording of the Oscar Peterson Trio at the Glocke. This concert was given, just like the one at the Concertgebouw, in 1961. But it was a completely different trio that performs that evening! We were totally enchanted and My Funny Valentine is notably one of the most irresistible versions that we have heard to date".
